Ninth graders from Moorestown Friends School (MFS) will be working with famous Philadelphia mosaic muralist Isaiah Zagar on March 27, 28, and 29 to create a mural at the South Bodine Street Community Garden in the Queen Village neighborhood of the city.
Six groups of students will work with Zagar over the three-day period. Half the day will be spent working on the mural and the other half will be spent exploring the community on a variety of themed tours that expose students to the changes in the Queen Village and Southwark neighborhoods over the past 200 years.
On March 27, students will take a walking tour with Carla Puppin of the Queen Village Neighborhood Association. On March 28, MFS teacher Rob Buscaglia will discuss efforts to redevelop Queen Village and describe efforts made to preserve the neighborhood. On March 29, students will hear from David Auspitz, the former owner of the Famous 4th Street Deli and chair of the Philadelphia Zoning Board of Adjustment, and Terry Mushovic of the Neighborhood Gardens Association.
The ninth grade’s exploration of Philadelphia neighborhoods is part of the school’s annual Intensive Learning program. All MFS students in grades 5-12 participate in Intensive Learning, which this year is taking place from March 23-30. Intensive Learning has been a school tradition for almost 30 years, as each grade in the Middle and Upper Schools takes an in-depth look at a particular topic or issue. Normal class schedules are suspended for the week, allowing students to take overnight field trips, complete hands-on projects and engage in other activities which apply what they have learned.
