Hundreds of members of the Moorestown Friends School (MFS) community will be on campus May 4 and 5 to celebrate alumni weekend with awards, class reunions, and the annual Red Sock Run.
At the annual alumni banquet on Friday, May 4, at 6 p.m., also known as the Dinner Among Friends, two Alumni Association award recipients will be honored. This year’s Alice Stokes Paul 1901 Merit Award winner is Dr. Thomas Reed Hedges, III, from the class of 1967. The award honors an individual who demonstrates a commitment to serve others and achieves a standard of excellence in his or her field. Dr. Hedges meets both of these criteria. He is a distinguished professor of ophthalmology and neurology at the Tufts-New England Eye Center, and has done volunteer work in the medical communities of Guatemala, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina and Cuba.
The 2007 recipient of the Alumni Association Service Award is Dr. Dudley “Sandy” Heath. The award is given to a person who has enhanced the quality of life at MFS. Dr. Heath, a Medford Leas resident, worked at MFS for 27 years, serving as director of the Upper School, chair of the social studies department, track coach, and social studies teacher. He also provided leadership on a number of distinctive school programs, including Intensive Learning, the Senior Project, the Mock Presidential Primary, and May Day.
The 4th Annual Red Sock Run will be held on Saturday morning, May 5, on the MFS athletics fields. The Red Sock Run was established in May 2004 in memory of former faculty member George Thomas, who passed away after 25 years of service to MFS. George was known for having his students join him in wearing red socks on Fridays. The event features a One Mile Fun Walk/Run, a Toddler Trek for those age five and younger, and a 5K race. All members of the MFS community are welcome to participate. There are registration fees for the races. The event times are listed below:
