Author Margaret O. Kirk visited the campus on October 17. She provided heartfelt and poignant remarks:

"In this book, I talk about traditions that are so visible: the Oval, Senior Benches, climbing the cupola, lockers, Spirit Week, Meeting for Worship, trips to Mystic Seaport, the mere mention of Alice Stokes Paul and the Camden Scholars program and the Camden Scholars themselves. But there are traditions here that are not as visible but nonetheless just real: a Tradition of Excellence, which Larry Van Meter often refers to as the twin pillars of academic rigor with spiritual and ethical awareness; the ability of the school to set forth the clear expectation and then provide the paths for student to 'Do Well and Do Good;' to show every day what it means to 'Live an Examined Life' and what it means to 'To Let your Life Speak;' the tradition of appreciating the value behind a beloved coach’s mantra - 'If you can touch it, you can catch it' - which I am sure is not totally about athletics; to provide the kind of environment that led a high school senior to state in her graduation speech that MFS had taught her 'to swing in the air – not to risk life - but to fly in it.' Those are all profound statements, and they speak to the essence of a school that produces graduates who have, as you like to say, 'tough minds and tender hearts.'

"The chance to write this history brought an unexpected benefit – the chance to examine the choice my husband and I made so many years ago when we chose a Quaker education for our sons, and to examine what that education now means in their lives. Did I realize that I had chosen these challenges, these paths for my own children, when I chose a Quaker education for them? I have to be honest and say probably not. But I can honestly say that I have not regretted it for one moment. I asked my husband, just this morning, why did we so value a Quaker education? And he said that it's because it is education that deals with the whole person, and not just the whole person but the individual. It is one of the best decisions I ever made."

Rehearsals are underway and the MFS hallways are already full of the wonderful music from this great musical, suitable for the whole family. Set in Damon Runyon's mythical New York City, this oddball romantic comedy - considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy - soars with the spirit of Broadway as it introduces us to a cast of vivid characters who have become legends in the canon: Sarah Brown, the upright but uptight "mission doll," out to reform the evildoers of Times Square; Sky Masterson, the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide, the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is brought on by the fact she's been engaged to the same man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit, her devoted fiance, desperate as always to find a spot for his infamous floating craps game.

Three Teams Qualify for Friends League Playoffs

Three fall sports teams qualified for the Friends Schools League playoffs. The Field Hockey team (10-3-2, 5-1-1 FSL) hosts Germantown Friends on Saturday in a semifinal matchup at 2 p.m. The Boys Soccer team (9-6-1 overall, 4-3-1 FSL) travels to Shipley on Saturday for a semifinal at 2 p.m. With wins, the teams would play in the final on Tuesday. The Girls Tennis team (14-5) fell to Friends Central yesterday in the FSL semifinals. FSL individual championship tournaments begin Saturday.

NJSIAA Playoff Picture

Field Hockey: #4 seed in Central Jersey Group 1 - hosts #5 Haddon Twp. on Monday at 2 p.m.

Boys Soccer: received a bye into Non-Public B quarterfinals as the #6 seed and will travel to #3 seed Trenton Catholic on Thursday, November 4.

Girls Soccer: MFS is the #7 seed and hosts #10 seed Sacred Heart on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Girls tennis: fell to Ranney School in the Non-Public B South finals.

Cross Country Update
The boys and girls cross country teams each finished in fourth place at the Friends Schools League Championships held last week at Friends Central. Leading the boys was senior Drew Haines who finished in seventh place. On October 12 in the George School meet, Haines also set the MFS school and course record when he ran a 16:14 on the 5K course. On the girls side, junior Carolyn Chelius led the team with an eighth place finish. The teams continue into state competition on Saturday, November 13.
