Moorestown Friends School Presents Guys and Dolls

Tickets are going fast for the Moorestown Friends School presentation of Guys and Dolls. Set in Damon Runyon's mythical New York City, this oddball romantic comedy - considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy - soars with the spirit of Broadway as it introduces us to a cast of vivid characters who have become legends in the canon: Sarah Brown (senior Amanda Barrish - second from left in photo), the upright but uptight "mission doll," out to reform the evildoers of Times Square; small-time gambler Nicely Nicely Johnson (junior Kyle Shivers - center); Sky Masterson (senior Jake Burbage - left), the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide (sophomore Emiko Borne - second from right), the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is brought on by the fact she's been engaged to the same man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit (senior Matt Tamburri - right), her devoted fiance, desperate as always to find a spot for his infamous floating craps game.

Tickets are available at the Stokes Hall Reception Desk between 7:45 a.m. and 4:15 p.m.

Thanksgiving Food Drive In Full Swing

From the Thanksgiving Happening Committee:

Thanksgiving season is here at MFS! From November 1 to November 18 our community collects nonperishable food to make up about 150 bags of complete Thanksgiving dinners.

Each dinner bag needs to contain 9 items:

  1. canned cranberry sauce,
  2. boxed or bagged stuffing mix,
  3. muffin mix or biscuit mix,
  4. canned vegetables,
  5. canned or packaged gravy (NO GLASS!),
  6. boxed instant mashed potatoes or canned yams,

…and the ingredients for pumpkin pie:

  1. pumpkin pie mix which contains the sugars & spices…very important! (not plain pumpkin),
  2. pie crust mix (not a pre-made or graham cracker shell!),
  3. evaporated (NOT CONDENSED!) milk.

All Lower School teachers and Middle/Upper School advisers are coordinating details for each class/advisor group.

As usual we also ask in addition for a donation of $1.00 from each child for the purchase of turkey vouchers.  The dinners and vouchers will be taken to New Visions Center in Camden.  Their food bank handles the distribution to needy clients on their lists. Turkey money cans are located throughout the school.

Sports News

A successful fall season is winding down for MFS varsity teams.

With a semifinal victory Saturday over Germantown Friends, the field hockey team reached the Friends Schools League championship for the second time in four years, losing to Shipley in the final. It is also the Foxes' fourth straight appearance in the league playoffs. They had beaten the Gators for the crown in 2007. A grueling schedule finally caught up with the team as the day before the FSL final they lost a heartbreaking NJSIAA playoff game to perennial power Haddon Township, 3-2, in double overtime. The team finished 11-5-2.

The girls tennis team put a cap on their successful season with two runner-up performances in the Friends League individual championships. Sophomore Lauren Carney was the runner up at third singles and the doubles team of junior Sammy Chen and sophomore Claire Langlotz fell in an exciting match that went to a third set tiebreak: 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). The team finished the season with a record of 14-6. Pictured at left (l to r): Sammy Chen, Claire Langlotz, Lauren Carney and Coach Mike Bodary.

The girls soccer team fell to Sacred Heart 3-1 in its first round NJSIAA playoff game. The team concluded the season 8-7-3.

The boys soccer team (9-7-1) received a bye into the second round of the NJSIAA Non-Public B South playoffs. Their game at Trenton Catholic scheduled to be played yesterday was postponed to today at 2 p.m. The Foxes earned a berth in the Friends League playoffs for the second consecutive year. They fell to Shipley in their semifinal match on Saturday. If the Foxes win today, they would play Monday in the South Jersey semifinals and either travel to #2 seed Gloucester Catholic or host #7 Holy Cross. Click here for the tournament bracket.

The boys (8-3) and girls cross country (4-5) teams continue into sectional and state competition over the next two weekends.
