Doing Well and Doing Good: MFS at 225...PRE-ORDER TODAY!
Special Offer for Class of 2010 Certificate Ends June 1
From Doing Well and Doing Good: MFS at 225...
Memory Milestone:
"I’m particularly grateful to have attended MFS during the late 60s, early 70s, a turbulent, convention-challenging, and exhilarating time in our social history. Having been raised in a Republican household with very conservative values, exposure to the core pacifistic beliefs of the Quakers and the liberalism of my teachers was a real culture shock. I remember dinner table conversations when I’d relay virulently anti-war statements heard in school to my apoplectic father. While part of the motivation was a teenager’s pleasure in goading a parent, it also reflected a growing awareness that wildly divergent viewpoints among people I respected was okay. It didn’t mean that they were good or bad people or good or bad Americans. They just looked at the world from different perspectives. Hearing these different voices forced me to sift through facts and the opinions of others and formulate my own opinions and beliefs. It helped me to become an independent thinker who, hopefully, is able to view the world in a more tolerant, less judgmental way. All of this is evident only in hindsight and many years later, which just goes to show that the lessons learned at MFS continue long after the fact."

Cum Laude/Honors Dinner Honors Academic Achievement
A number of Upper School students were honored last night for their academic achievement at the Cum Laude/Honors Banquet. The students and guests heard remarks from keynote speaker David Baiada '95. Baiada is part of the management team at Bayada Nurses. Specifically, he manages the Skilled Visit Practice, which serves 50,000 clients a year. When he was in the Upper School at MFS, Baiada was inducted into the Cum Laude Society as a junior and the National Spanish Honor Society as a sophomore.
Cum Laude Society
Fourteen students were inducted into the Cum Laude Society, a national honor society for academically challenging independent schools.
The inductees include seniors Emma Baiada, Robert Engel, Clara Fischer, Eric Maertin, Kathryn Schlechtweg, Arianne Taormina and Tej Trivedi. Juniors selected for the honor are Peter Barna, Alleanna Harris, Isaias Muñoz, Samantha Saludades, Darshak Thosani, Brian White and David White.
Named to the Cum Laude Society last year were current seniors Alison Barton, Alissa Beckett, Monica Chelius, Phillip Dorsey, Keyanah Freeland, Jacob Montgomery and Heather Moore.
Students are selected for membership based on their cumulative record of academic excellence in all subject areas. No more than 20 percent of a school’s senior class may be selected, with no more than 10 percent chosen during their junior year. Moorestown Friends School received its Cum Laude charter in 1962. |
Honors Program
In addition, ten MFS seniors were honored for completion of the MFS Honors Program. The program is a two-year sequence of curricular requirements, including completing various AP courses and undertaking a capstone project. Students are selected based upon their academic record, intellectual curiosity, motivation, self-discipline, organization, an ability to work independently and strong teacher recommendations. This year’s class of the MFS Honors Program are Alison Barton, Monica Chelius, Philip Dorsey, Robert Engel, Clara Fischer, Samantha Kay, Jacob Montgomery, Kathryn Schlechtweg, Arianne Taormina and Tej Trivedi.

World Languages Honor Societies
Two students were inducted into world language honor societies. Named to the French Honor Society was senior Jacob Montgomery. Named to the Spanish Honor Society was junior Mary Elizabeth Boccolini. The French and Spanish Honor Societies recognize superior achievement in world languages at the intermediate or advanced level and superior academic achievement in a student’s total program. The organizations, with chapters at MFS since 1989, are designed to promote interest in the study of French and Spanish language and culture. The Société Honoraire de Français and the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica are national organizations with chapters throughout the United States.
