2010-11 All-School Book Activity: Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson

2010-11 One Book All-Community Read

Book Order Form

Lower School

Middle School

Upper School

Reading a book as an entire community encourages literacy, highlights reading and serves to unite the community through a common experience. Many of you may remember our first One Book Day in which the entire school read Henry Hikes to Fitchburg, a picture book about Henry David Thoreau, and then participated in multi-age discussion groups and other activities inspired by the book.  It was a very successful celebration of books, reading, and community.  We are looking forward to another One Book experience in 2010-11.

Greg Mortenson’s book Three Cups of Tea has been chosen as the all-community read for 2010-11.  This book directly addresses both ideals and concepts that are intrinsic to our school community.  It is now published in three versions: an illustrated picture book, a junior version, and the original book, making it the ideal book for an all-School experience. The English Department is asking students entering grades 5 -12 to read Three Cups of Tea in addition to their summer reading book.  Lower School teachers will be sharing the picture book Listen to the Wind with their classes in the fall.  You can order books at a discounted cost by filling out this form and returning it to school by Monday, May 3.

To Volunteer:

A Middle/Upper School committee of parents, students, faculty & staff is now being formed. If you are interested in serving on the committee please email Middle School Dean and English Teacher Maggie Beck or Head Librarian Martha Reilly.

A committee of Lower School parents and teachers is also being formed.  Please contact Lower School Librarian Deb Alterman if you are interested in participating.

Middle School Science Olympians Fare Well at State Competition

On March 16,  the Middle School Science Olympiad team travelled to Middlesex Community College to compete in the New Jersey Science Olympiad state finals. The competition featured 24 events. MFS placed first in two of them.

Seventh graders Scott Strickland and Patrick Johnson placed first in the Junkyard Challenge and seventh grader C.J. Eni and ninth grader Andrew Jaffe brought home the first place medal in Trajectory.

The MFS team also won six other awards. Medal winners were seventh graders Tim Carter, Tommy Hietzman and Matt Scalamandre, eighth grader Joe Mulholland, sixth grader Travis Benedict and ninth grader Spencer Bard.

MFS Middle School Science Teachers Deborah Bruvik and Chuck Blatherwick served as advisers/coaches for the team.

Fifth Graders Garner County Awards in Conservation Art and Essay Contest

Two MFS students won county awards in the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey Art and Essay contest. Fifth grader Mattie Sloan is the Burlington County winner and fifth grader Julia Giordano is the county runner-up.

Created in 2003, the "Species on the Edge" Art & Essay Contest engages New Jersey’s fifth graders to learn about our state’s over 70 endangered and threatened wildlife species.

Calling All May Day Volunteers

The quadrennial May Day celebration is just around the corner - Friday, May 7! This longstanding MFS tradition occurs once every four years, and plans are moving along nicely. If you are interested in volunteering for May Day, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. Projects range from working on costumes to helping with events on May 7. If you would like more information about May Day, or would like to volunteer, please contact Matt Nierenberg, Director of Parent and Alumni Programs via e-mail or at (856) 914-4416.

If you can’t volunteer your time on May Day, you can still help the planning effort. Kiyo Moriuchi and Rose Frola are working with volunteers to help create costumes for the event. A variety of items are used for the costumes, and if you have any of the following lying around at home and do not have a need for them, the May Day costumers would love to take them off your hands:

  • Low boots (Florsheim like) men’s sizes 9-14
  • Clean pantyhose/tights (with runs or stretched out – no problem!)
  • Clean silk flowers, on stem or off
  • Clean ivy
  • Clean baseball caps
  • Cloth ribbons
  • Old costumes – crowns, flags, etc.

The items do not have to be new, and even smaller accessories can be used.

Fox Tracks

Junior Michael Brady earned the Boy Scouts of America rank of Eagle Scout on March 11.  This is the highest rank that a Scout can earn and it requires that they complete 21 merit badges, demonstrate leadership and complete a community service project.  For his service project, Brady designed and coordinated the construction of a dragonfly pond at the Rancocas Nature Center in Westhampton. He has been an active member of Delran Troop 17 since 2004.  His most memorable Scouting experiences include participating in the 2007 World Scout Jamboree in England and completing a 50-mile hike along the Appalachian Trail in New Jersey.  He plans to remain active in his Troop.

Submit all notable out-of-classroom highlights for Fox Tracks to news@mfriends.org.
