Pre-Ordering Approaches for Doing Well and Doing Good: MFS at 225

Look for pre-ordering information after Spring Break for the limited edition book Doing Well and Doing Good: MFS at 225.

In 2010-11 Moorestown Friends School will celebrate its 225th Anniversary with a number of special events. Throughout the year, the rich history of one of the oldest three-division Friends schools in the United States will be told.

It is that story that is being captured in a handsome book, scheduled for publication in September 2010. This 128-page coffee table book details the school’s early beginnings, growth, leadership changes, and rise to becoming one of the premier independent schools in the country.

Written by author Margaret O. Kirk, a Friends school parent from Philadelphia, the story of MFS past and present is helped along by the many alums, faculty, and retirees who shared their love of MFS in this book.

Two Sophomores Earn Prestigious Summer Internships
Hiremath and Hege two of 250 students selected nationwide for Office of Naval Research Internships

Sophomores Karan Hiremath and Gabe Hege have been accepted as paid summer interns in the prestigious Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP) with the U.S. Office of Naval Research. They will spend eight weeks this summer conducting research at a Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory.

The goals of SEAP are to encourage participating students to pursue science and engineering careers, to further their education via mentoring by laboratory personnel and their participation in research, and to make them aware of DoN Research and technology efforts, which can lead to employment within the DoN. SEAP provides competitive research internships to approximately 250 high school students each year.

Robotics Teams Win Awards at Eastern PA Competition

Two MFS Robotics teams won awards at the Eastern Pennsylvania FIRST Tech State Robotics Championship, held March 6 in Weatherly, PA.

The MFS Foxes won the FIRST Tech Challenge Think Award – seniors Ryan Brancato and Dan Obaisi, junior Taylor Cheng and sophomores Gabe Hege and Matt Eckart. This award is given to the team that best reflects the “journey” the team took as they experienced the engineering design process during the build season.   The Engineering Notebook is the key reference for judges to help identify the most deserving team.

The MFS Hawks won the FIRST Tech Challenge Connect Award – seniors Alison Barton, Meagan Connelly and Andrew Rosenbach, junior Michael Brady and sophomore Karan Hiremath. This award is given to the team that most connected with their local community and the engineering community. The team that wins this award is aggressively reaching out to engineers and exploring the opportunities available in the world of engineering, science and technology.

Sports Shorts

Five swimmers were named to the All-Friends Schools League first team.

Named to the boys team were senior Justin Stark and sophomores Doug Adair and Val Demuynck. Sophomores Klein Aleardi and Sophia Depaulis were named to the girls team.

Calling All May Day Volunteers

The quadrennial May Day celebration is just around the corner - Friday, May 7! This longstanding MFS tradition occurs once every four years, and plans are moving along nicely. If you are interested in volunteering for May Day, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. Projects range from working on costumes to helping with events on May 7. If you would like more information about May Day, or would like to volunteer, please contact Matt Nierenberg, Director of Parent and Alumni Programs via e-mail or at (856) 914-4416.

If you can’t volunteer your time for May Day, you can still help the planning effort. Kiyo Moriuchi and Rose Frola are working with volunteers to help create costumes for the event. A variety of items are used for the costumes, and if you have any of the following lying around at home and do not have a need for them, the May Day costumers would love to take them off your hands:

  • Low boots (Florsheim like) men’s sizes 9-14
  • Clean pantyhose/tights (with runs or stretched out – no problem!)
  • Clean silk flowers, on stem or off
  • Clean ivy
  • Cloth ribbons
  • Old costumes – crowns, flags, etc.

The items do not have to be new, and even smaller accessories can be used.

Volunteers Needed for Intensive Learning

Adult volunteers are needed to assist with the "Sustainable Eating" Upper School Intensive Learning Unit being overseen by Science Chair Barb Krieder and History Teacher Judy van Tijn. There is a need for extra hands in the kitchen at Philly Kitchen Share in the city on March 22-25. Two adult volunteers for each day are being sought. Parents will be able to indulge in the food that they help prepare and learn about sustainable eating from professionals who will come to the kitchen to speak.

The bus will depart the MFS Oval each day at 8 a.m. and return at 3 p.m.

For more information or to volunteer, please contact Barb Kreider via e-mail or by phone: 856-235-2900 x218
