Teacher and Student Honored by Burlington County Times

History Teacher Judy van Tijn and
senior Jacob Montgomery were honored by the Burlington
County Times at their Teen Excellence and Civic Engagement
Banquet. Van Tijn received a Civic Engagement Award presented
to 19 Burlington County teachers nominated by their schools for
their work beyond the classroom in encouraging student participation
in service work and community activity. Montgomery received a
Teen Excellence Award presented to 25 Burlington County high
school students for their overall achievements in academics,
service and athletics. Montgomery, who will attend Harvard University
after a gap year, was also featured in the June
10 edition of the BCT. |
Director of Multicultural Affairs To Serve As Co-Leader on Cuba Service Trip

Director of Multicultural Affairs Karen
Washington will serve as a co-leader of a service
trip to Cuba as part of George School's Global Service Program.
Over the years, she has led student groups to Spain and Central
America. In 2003 she visited Puerto Rico on a Zekavat Summer
Sabbatical and interviewed local families. In 2007 she helped
Haitian sugar cane workers on a service trip to the Dominican
Republic. In 2009 she participated in the George School Global
Service Program to Cuba and will be a co-leader of the 2010
Cuban trip. |
Drama Teacher To Produce Student Theater in Germany

Drama Teacher Mark Gornto will
help direct and provide technical support for a weekend of one-act
plays performed by 11th graders at the Rudolf Steiner School
in Nurenburg, Germany in July. He will be a guest of teacher
Sabine Eichenmuller who visited MFS in 2009 and observed Gornto
in action. "The plays are in English, but I hope to use
and enhance my German skills while there," said Gornto. "This
is a great opportunity and I am very grateful for the chance
to visit the Steiner School and assist with the production." The
Steiner School is home to 2009-10 junior exchange student Simon
Hohage. |
Teacher and Service Coordinator To Travel to Costa Rica for Zekavat Summer Sabbatical

Computer Teacher and Upper School Service
Coordinator Gail Barna has received the 2010
Zekavat Summer Sabbatical. She will be traveling to Costa Rica
to help build and plan for future service learning trips with
students and faculty to Central and South America. Barna will
be participating in a teacher and group leader education program
at the Sarapiqui Conservation Learning Center, which is a partner
with the Selva Verde Lodge. The Sarapiqui Conservation Learning
Center offers programs in environmental education, community
development, conservation, and tourism. The sabbatical fund was
endowed in 1996 by the Zekavat Family to encourage MFS faculty
to engage in creative and challenging summer travel and study
for several weeks. |
Lower School Teachers To Attend Columbia Reading and Writing Institutes
Four Lower School teachers will attend week-long
Reading or Writing Institutes at Columbia University this summer:

Cupola (Yearbook) Receives Showcase Award
Moorestown Friends School has received national recognition for its 2010 yearbook, The Cupola. The Showcase Award recognizes outstanding achievement in yearbook design and coverage. The Cupola advisers are English Teacher Debra Galler and Art Teacher Nicole Edmund. Student editors were seniors Nicole Respond and Samantha Smith.

No ‘Pomp and Circumstance’

Fox Tracks
Eighth grader and all-time leading goal scorer for the MFS Middle School Boys Lacrosse Team, Daniel McGinn, was recently named to the NJ State U15 All Star Team to compete at the U.S. Lacrosse U15 National Lacrosse Festival to be held in Lake George, NY this summer. Not to be outdone by his son, Head Coach of the MFS Middle School Boys Lacrosse Team, Michael
McGinn, was asked to serve as the team’s head coach. Coach McGinn previously served as associate head coach to the U13 NJ State team which competed in Dayton, OH in 2008.
- Pilar Martinez,
a seventh grader, whose stage name is Pilar Martin, just recorded
her first original song, with well-known recording artist Tony
Coluccio (who has written for Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Whitney
Houston, Patti La Belle and more). The song will appear on the
soundtrack for the upcoming feature film Standing Ovation, which
opens on July 16 nationwide.
