Screening of Film The Prep School Negro Planned for February 25
Filmmaker André Lee To Appear for Q & A

AOL Black Voices InterviewMoorestown Friends School and Haddonfield Friends School are pleased to collaborate to present a screening of The Prep School Negro on Thursday, February 25 at 7 p.m. in the D'Olier Room of the Meeting House. In addition to the film screening (approx. 55 min.), a discussion will follow featuring a Q & A session with filmmaker and Germantown Friends School alum André Lee.

About the Film

André Robert Lee and his sister grew up in the ghettos of Philadelphia. Their mother struggled to support them by putting strings in the waistbands of track pants and swimsuits in a local factory. When André was 14 years old, he received what his family believed to be a golden ticket – a full scholarship to attend one of the most prestigious prep schools in the country. Elite education was André’s way up and out, but at what price? Yes, the exorbitant tuition was covered, but this new world cost him and his family much more than anyone could have anticipated. In The Prep School Negro, André takes a journey back in time to revisit the events of his adolescence while also spending time with current day prep school students of color and their classmates to see how much has really changed inside the ivory tower.

If you plan to attend, please RSVP by Tuesday, February 16 to Karen Washington, Director of Multicultural Affairs, via e-mail or at ext. 254.

Students Organize Dinner Concert Benefit for Meeting Enrichment Program

On January 15, as a kickoff event leading into the school’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, MFS students presented a very successful dinner concert as a fundraiser that was attended by about 100 lovers of music and the culinary arts. Organized by senior Monica Chelius as part of her Capstone Project, with the help of junior Louise Peterson, the evening consisted of two hours of primarily chamber music performed by MFS students, accompanied by dinner and desserts provided by the Barbeque and Dessert Clubs. The funds raised were donated to the Moorestown Friends Monthly Meeting Enrichment Program. Headed by Monique Begg, this program is dedicated to giving qualified children opportunities in the arts to develop their skills and talents and build their self-confidence, thus helping them prepare for their future role as adult members of the community. A great time was had by all audience members and volunteers!
