2012 Mock Primary Election Buildup
Recent activities in the buildup to the January 10 MFS Mock Primary Election included a classroom visit (top photo) by noted economist, scholar and Bloomberg news columnist Laurence Kotlikoff '69, the William Fairfield Warren Professor of Economics at Boston University. A press conference with all six candidates was also recently held. In the photo above, senior Doug Adair (a.k.a. Rick Perry) responds to a query from the MFS student press corps.

Pre-Order Deadline for 2012 Yearbook is December 16 - ORDER TODAY!

Every year at MFS is full of precious memories. The MFS yearbook is a chronicle of the year in all divisions, from Lower School class pictures and candids to beautiful, full-color coverage of activities and sports in the Middle and Upper Schools. The only way to guarantee your copy of the 2012 yearbook is to pre-order by December 16. You can visit the MFS intranet site (mfsweb.mfriends.org) and click on the link to order your yearbook. You should be able to search for your last name and find your classroom and teacher information already entered for you. Please take advantage of pre-ordering – every year we have to turn people away in June because we do not have enough extra books to accommodate last-minute requests. Don’t be left out – order today! Questions should be directed to Debra Galler, via e-mail or at ext. 229.

Preschoolers Explore Tools

Preschool students in Morgan Gandal’s class at Moorestown Friends School (MFS) recently travelled to the MFS maintenance garage to meet with two members of the Maintenance Department. Mike Walker and Arnell Palmer welcomed the children and showed them all of the maintenance equipment, vehicles and signs stored in the garage. However, the students were most interested in the tools, especially Mr. Palmer’s favorite, the socket screwdriver. Mrs. Gandal and preschool assistant, Melanie Gfeller, were not surprised – using tools is one of the students’ preferred activities.

“As early childhood teachers,” said Gandal, “we are always watching and listening to see if the children present us with a learning opportunity and we believe we have found one.”

In fact, based upon the children’s interest in the tools, a special project was launched in which the children invited members of the MFS community to share their interests in tools, or to demonstrate how a favorite tool works.

Robotics Report

Emily Whitley, Angel Mathew and Anehita Oribabor, members of the MFS Falcons Robotics team, work on their robot at the recent Crate Expectations NJ FTC qualifier, held at MFS on Sunday.

The three MFS Robotics teams - the Foxes, Falcons and Hawks - have been very busy competing this fall. They competed in the following events:

  • Ramp Riot Scrimmage at Wissahickon High School on November 12 - the Foxes and Falcons were both members of the three-team winning alliance.
  • Fall Harvest NJ FTC Qualifier on November 20 at Cherokee H.S. - the Foxes were part of the Finalist Alliance (2nd place) and won the Connect Award for outreach to introduce robotics in the community.
  • Four seniors on the Foxes team travelled to the Northern New York FTC Championship at Clarkson University on December 2. They were members of the Finalist Alliance and also won the PTC Design Award.
  • The Hawks and Falcons competed at the Crate Expectations NJ FTC Qualifier on December 4, hosted by MFS. The Falcons won the Connect Award for their outreach work. The Hawks were nominated for the highest award, the Inspire Award. They did not win the award, but getting nominated for it qualified the team to advance to the NJ FTC State Championship on Saturday, February 12 at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The Foxes and Falcons have also qualified for the NJ FTC State Championship by winning the Connect Award at a qualifier.

MFS Book Club for Parents: "The Global Achievement Gap"

On January 30, 2012, MFS will host a book club for parents at 7 p.m. in a location still to be determined. The reading for the book club meeting is The Global Achievement Gap, by Tony Wagner. As you may recall, Tony was on campus earlier this year, and his book was a model for aspects of the newly developed MFS Strategic Plan. A discussion about the book will be held at school, led by members of the faculty. There are copies available for purchase in the Development Office and the book is available to download from the Barnes & Noble website. If you have any questions about this event, or would like to reserve one of the school's copies, please contact Matt Nierenberg, Director of Parent & Alumni Programs, via e-mail or at (856) 914-4416.
