Lightning, Twisters and Hail!
Science Fun with the Franklin Institute
Saturday, January 22, 10 a.m., Dining Hall Commons
(Open to current students and guests grades K-4.)

Science Fun with the Franklin Institute will be held on Saturday, January 22 at 10 a.m. in the Dining Hall Commons. MFS students in kindergarten through fourth grade and guests considering application to the school are invited to attend. The award-winning MFS Upper School Robotics team will also have an interactive demonstration prior to the weather show.

The Franklin Institute traveling weather show reveals the science of weather...to the extreme. Where does our weather come from, and what factors make it a sunny day or a blustery one? Watch the presenter make a cloud, explore thunder and lightning, and even create snow. We promise a stormy ending to this show as the presenter demonstrates the power of a tornado.

The Franklin Institute also visits MFS for assemblies during the school year.

Students must be accompanied by an adult. Please RSVP for this program by contacting the Admissions Office via e-mail or by phone: 856-914-4426.

Seniors Darshak Thosani and Hee Jin Kim earned honorable mention in the 2011 Delaware Valley Science Council competition, an annual program to identify, encourage, and recognize talented youth that has been in existence for over 50 years.

On December 4, MFS hosted a FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) qualifying competition. Robotics teams from 25 schools in New Jersey and Pennsylvania competed, including three MFS teams.

Read coverage of the event in the December 5 edition of the Burlington County Times.

At the event, the MFS Falcons (see photo), a team consisting of all girls - a rarity at robotics competitions - won the Most Impressive New Team Award. They were also a runner up for the Motivate Award.

At the recent Robotics competition at MFS, the Science Department presented Jay Hiremath, father of junior Karan Hiremath, with an "Outstanding Volunteer" award. He has been an active volunteer in the robotics program and served as both as judge and referee at several competitions, including the MFS competition.

“MFS Robotics is lucky to have Jay in the parent volunteer pool," said Science Department Chair Dr. Barbara Kreider. "A knowledgeable engineer, Jay can referee, judge and coach. More importantly, he is a role model of how to behave in competition. He unfailingly demonstrates grace under pressure as well as concern for everyone. I can think of no finer ambassador to the larger community than Mr. Hiremath.”

Two Students Named to South Jersey Music Groups

On Saturday, December 11, nearly 500 students auditioned at Eastern Regional High School for the prestigious South Jersey Band and Orchestra Director’s Association (SJBODA) groups: Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Chamber Ensemble, String Ensemble, and Symphonic Band.

Junior violinist Carolyn Chelius and seventh grade cellist Erin Chen were both accepted into the South Jersey Orchestra and are also now eligible for the South Jersey String Ensemble which are determined during rehearsals. Carolyn Chelius was also accepted into the South Jersey Chamber Ensemble and awarded one of only seven string spots.

Both students are now eligible to audition for All-State musical groups.

Erin Chen is a member of the MFS Middle School String Ensemble and Carolyn Chelius is a member of the MFS Upper School Chamber Ensemble.

Arts Department Chair and MS/US Music Teacher Brian Howard was on site helping with auditions which took place on Saturday, December 11.
