"Bring a Friends to Friends" - November 29 - December 2
The Admissions Office will host “Bring a Friend to Friends” from Tuesday, November 29 - Friday, December 2. Please contact friends with school-age children in grades 1 - 9 who might be interested in considering Moorestown Friends School. Having their child visit for the day just might provide the incentive to have them seriously consider MFS. It’s this simple:
- Contact your friend and select a day from November 29 - December 2 for their child’s visit.
- Please e-mail the Admissions Office to RSVP the date of the visit by Monday, November 21. If the visitor is in your child’s grade, and you would like, we will assign your child as the host. If the visitor is in another grade, we will be happy to assign a host. Please have the parents’ names and address, phone number or email as well as the child’s name and grade available when you contact us.
- We will then contact your friend to confirm the date and give further details.

MFS Mock Primary Election is Tuesday, January 10
On January 10, 2012, MFS will hold a mock
Republican primary election. To mirror the real election, if
an incumbent president is running, the school only holds a primary
for the other party. MFS has held mock campaign events every
four years since 1960. Through researching candidates and
issues, running campaigns, and voting, students learn about the
political process, see how they can get involved, and come to
understand the impact they can have on our nation. From
1960 to 1996 MFS held Mock Political Conventions which typically
featured the party that was out of power at the time. Since
2000, MFS has held Mock Primaries.
The
MFS candidates are Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, John Huntsman,
Ron Paul, Rick Perry and Mitt Romney. Each candidate will be
portrayed by an Upper School student throughout the campaign
season. Students in grades 5-12, faculty, and staff vote in the
mock election. In addition to selecting a Republican candidate,
voters also weigh in on selected hot-button issues. This year,
the issues include the soda tax, gender equality, disposal of
nuclear waste, federal funds for abortion, ban on preemptive
declaration of war and gay marriage. Lower School students also
have opportunities to learn about the electoral process.
The keynote speaker will be nationally syndicated
radio host Michael Smerconish.
Additional speakers and workshop presenters are being scheduled
and updates will be provided as the election draws closer.

Second Graders Enjoy Geocaching
While working on their map study unit,
on November 4, Mrs. Huston and Mrs. Rivenburgh's second grade
classes had the opportunity to partake in the real-world treasure
hunting game, Geocaching. Led by Mrs. Huston's husband, Scott,
second graders used GPS-enabled devices to navigate to a specific
set of GPS coordinates and then attempted to find the geocache
(container) hidden at that location. Using the GPS devices, the
students located boxes on the athletic fields containing geocache
coins. After the geocache items were found, students signed the
logbook and re-hid the geocache for someone else to find. |

Children at the recent Middle School Service Fair. |
On November 3, Moorestown Friends School hosted
representatives from the Invisible Children organization. Invisible
Children, founded in 2005 as a charitable organization, uses
film, creativity and social action to attempt to end the use
of child soldiers in Ugandan Joseph Kony’s rebel war and
restore communities affected by the Lord’s Resistance Army
(LRA) in central Africa to peace and prosperity.
Volunteers or “roadies” visited
MFS where they screened a film about the founding of Invisible
Children, the specific work they undertake in central Africa
and the challenges still faced today. The film specifically focused
on one of the “night commuters” – children
who were forced to leave their villages for the city at night
in order to avoid abduction by the LRA.
Afterwards, one of the “roadies,” Brenda,
a Ugandan woman, who at home serves as a mentor for 28 girls
by helping them develop leadership and life skills, addressed
the Upper School students. She told her story of living in fear
of the LRA and how this war has devastated many families and
communities in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The visit by Invisible Children was a result
of the efforts of junior Nate Riggins who became
involved in the issue after studying about child soldiers in
the course Exploring International Humanitarian Law last year.
The course is taught by Chester Reagan Chair for Quaker and Religious
Studies Priscilla Taylor-Williams. Read
